Description
Taken at Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya.
A close up of a Southern White Rhino grazing. While visiting Kenya my hope was to see a rhino. The animals are extremely endangered, especially in Kenya. However, while in Masai Mara I was fortunate to get close to one of these animals. This rhino is under 24 hour protection and is slightly used to humans. It is still wild, but in order to protect it they have had to get it comfortable around people. They are kept on a small part of the reserve in order to better protect them so the drive is long and rough, but it is worth all of the time.
White Rhinos are much more docile than their counterparts the Black Rhino, which is part of the reason I was able to get closer. The Southern White Rhino saw a climb in their numbers several years ago, but recently due to more demand for rhino horn they are starting to decline again. They are most prominently found in South Africa, but can be found over much of the African continent. To see a rhino in the wild is a truly magnificent experience.
